I wondered what you thought about that.ĭM: I don't feel comfortable commenting on the article because I’m not Katie, but what I can comment on is that talking about cancel culture is difficult because a lot of people make compelling points that cancel culture is a ruse and a cover for criticism. Part of your new episode “ Trash ” is about how reporter Katie Herzog was attacked for reporting on the experience of someone who is transgender and then de-transitioned. My theory, and this is totally rooted in opinion and feeling, is because we are communicating with so many people online, we find it more necessary to put our flag in the ground and identify who we are. So, why do you think people put themselves into a box like that?ĭM: Long before what we think of as identity politics began, people have been claiming their political identity. People who say they're liberal believe very different things from each other, so you can’t put that label into a box. I guess it’s ingrained in my identity but part of the show I want to be explicitly clear about is that listening to someone doesn’t cause me to say, “oh my values have changed,” but it certainly has made me rethink the way I talk to people. I think one time in the show I called myself a liberal coastal bubble person, and that became a T-shirt. There’s this NBC News article about you, and they called you a liberal podcast host, but I noticed you don't use that title yourself.ĭM: Well, I am a liberal, at least I identify as very progressive. You get a better interview when people feel comfortable and safe, and yes they have the option of choosing an alias first name, and the option of distorting their voice. So I don't let them on to it, that it is in fact a safe space, but I want all my guests to feel safe and that means making sure they know that I'm not going to pull a fast one on them. Ironically, this means making a safe space for people who absolutely hate the term “safe space”. My main goal is to make all the guests feel as safe as possible. Does anyone come on your show and ask for their name to be confidential or use a fake name?ĭylan Marron: Totally.
